On a Mac? Scratchpad for Mac puts your notes in the Dock, starts a new note from any app with ⌃⌥N, and shows your reminders as notifications.

Set it up in a minute

  1. Add the extension

Pick your browser above. In Safari, open the app once, then turn on Save to Scratchpad in Safari's Settings, under Extensions.

  2. Make a capture key

In Scratchpad, open Settings, Capture from anywhere and make a new capture key.

  3. Paste it in

Open the extension's settings, paste the key, and click Save. It checks that the key works before keeping it.

  4. Clip a page

On any page, click the Scratchpad button in your toolbar, add tags if you like, and click Save.

A capture key can only add notes. It can't read, change, or delete anything in your Scratchpad, and you can revoke it in Settings at any time.

Good questions.

What ends up in the note?

The page's title, a link back to it, the site and author when the page names them, the date, and your tags, followed by the article itself with its headings, pictures, tables, and links. Menus, ads, comments, and share buttons are left behind, and recipes keep their ingredients and steps. The pictures are saved in Scratchpad, so the note keeps them even if the page disappears.

Does it work on pages behind a sign-in or a paywall?

With the extension, yes. It sends the page exactly as your browser shows it, so any article you can read, you can save. The bookmarklet asks Scratchpad to fetch the page instead, so it can only read pages that are open to everyone, and it saves just the link for the rest.

Where do clipped pages go?

Into a folder called Clips, which is made the first time you save a page. Each page is its own note, and you can move it, edit it, and search it like any other.

Can I save just part of a page?

Yes. Select the passage first, then click the extension's button and tick Only what I selected.

Why a capture key instead of signing in?

So the extension never holds your password or your session. A capture key can add notes and nothing else, it stays in the extension's own storage where websites can't reach it, and you can revoke it in Settings without affecting anything else.

Does the extension see my browsing?

No. It does nothing until you click its button, and then it reads only the tab you clicked it in and sends that page to your Scratchpad. It has no analytics and sends nothing anywhere else. Our privacy policy has the details.

Does it cost extra?

No. The extension and the bookmarklet are free with every Scratchpad plan.
