Scratchpad for Linux

Catch every idea the moment you have it. Press CtrlAltN in any app and start typing, get your reminders as desktop notifications, and never hunt through browser tabs for your notes again.

Download the AppImage

Or get the .deb for Ubuntu and Debian, for Intel and AMD or ARM.

Included with your Scratchpad account. The AppImage runs on most distributions and keeps itself up to date.

Write it down before it’s gone.

Press CtrlAltN in any app, in the middle of an email, a call, or a spreadsheet, and Scratchpad comes forward with a fresh note, ready to type. No tab to find, no page to load.

When Scratchpad is already in front, CtrlN starts a new note and Ctrl, opens Settings, with menus in your own language.

Reminders that actually reach you.

Set a reminder in any note, and right on time it arrives as a desktop notification, even with the window closed. Click it, and the note opens.

Closing the window keeps Scratchpad running in the tray, and Open at Login starts it quietly when you sign in, so nothing slips by.

Your passkeys, all of them.

Scratchpad signs in through your browser, so the passkey you already use just works, from Chrome, a password manager, or a YubiKey.

Locked notes open the same way, with a matching code on both screens so you always know it’s you.

  • Made for Linux

A tray icon, real menus in your language, a window that remembers where you left it, and spell check in every note.

  • Always the latest

The app updates itself in the background, and new Scratchpad features arrive the day they ship.

  • Every note, everywhere

The same notes as on the web, your phone, and your other computers, kept in sync as you type.

Good questions.

Why does it open my browser to sign in?

Passkeys live in your browser, your password manager, or on a security key, where a desktop app can’t reach them. So the app hands the sign-in to your browser, where every passkey, Google, and your password work, and comes straight back signed in. Unlocking a note with a passkey works the same way. Nothing is shared with the app but the sign-in itself.

Should I get the AppImage or the .deb?

The AppImage runs on almost any distribution with nothing to install: make it executable and open it (on Ubuntu 22.04 or later, install libfuse2 first). The .deb installs Scratchpad like any other app on Ubuntu and Debian, with sudo apt install ./Scratchpad-linux-amd64.deb. Both update themselves, and the .deb asks for your password to install each update.

Why don’t I see the tray icon?

Some desktops, like stock GNOME on Fedora and Debian, only show tray icons with the AppIndicator extension turned on. Ubuntu has it already. Without it, open Scratchpad again from your apps, or press Ctrl+Alt+N.

Does it work offline?

Not yet. Like the web app, it needs an internet connection to open and save your notes.

Does it cost extra?

No. The Linux app comes with every Scratchpad plan.

Is there a Windows version?

Not yet. On Windows, Scratchpad works in any browser, and Chrome and Edge can install it as an app from the address bar.

Is there a Mac version?

Yes. Scratchpad for Mac is included with every plan too.

Your notes, one keystroke away.
