Free AI skills for notes and writing.

90 open-source skills that teach your AI assistant to take notes the way someone who really knows the job would. Cornell notes, recipe cards, meeting notes, birding logs, and blog posts. Free for everyone, and at their best with Scratchpad.

Get the skills

Your assistant takes notes. Not good ones.

Ask for Cornell notes and you get headings with bullets under them. Ask for meeting notes and a maybe turns into a decision. A skill is a short file that teaches your assistant how an expert would do the job, every time, without you explaining it again.

Expert habits, written down.

Each skill is one Markdown file your assistant loads when it's relevant. It says what to ask you, how to do the work, the format to use, and the mistakes that make that kind of note fail.

You never have to call one by name. Ask for "something I can study from" and your assistant notices it has a skill for that. And none of them invents a fact: anything missing is marked, so you can fill it in.

One command, or just the ones you want.

Install all 90 with the skills command, which sets them up for Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Gemini CLI, and more. Or name only the ones you want. They're listed on skills.sh too.

In Claude Code they are four plugins too, one for each collection, and for the Claude apps every skill comes as a file to upload. Every way to install them.

Straight into your notes.

Every skill ends the same way: if a notes app is connected, it offers to save the result there. Connect Scratchpad, and your meeting notes become a note you'll find again, or go on the end of the running note for that meeting, action items and all.

It works the other way too. Ask for your weekly review from this week's notes, and your assistant reads them before it asks you anything. How to connect Scratchpad.

Every skill is plain Markdown. Add the field your hobby needs, change a template, or write a new one with the style guide.

90 skills, 4 collections.

Install a whole collection, or only the skills you need. Each name opens the skill on GitHub.

Note-taking methods 17 Cornell notes, the Zettelkasten, mind maps, SQ3R, flash cards, and the other established ways to take notes.
Notes by interest 33 For students, teachers, photographers, cooks, gardeners, musicians, writers, developers, birders, and more.
Everyday notes 20 Meetings, daily notes, weekly reviews, inboxes, and keeping it all tidy and easy to find.
Writing 20 From a pile of notes to a first draft, then clearer, shorter, and in your own voice.

Whether it was a lecture, a recipe, or a meeting, my assistant gave me back the same tidy list of bullets. I wanted notes that read the way I'd have written them myself, so that's what these skills do.

Good questions.

What is an AI skill?

A short instruction file, a SKILL.md, that an AI assistant loads when it's relevant to what you asked. It's how you teach an assistant to do one job well, every time, without explaining it again.

Do I need Scratchpad to use them?

No. Without a notes app connected, every skill gives you the finished note as Markdown, ready to paste anywhere. With Scratchpad connected, your assistant saves it for you.

Which assistants can use them?

Claude, in the apps and in Claude Code, plus Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Gemini CLI, and any other assistant that reads skills. If yours doesn't, paste a skill into the chat and ask it to follow it.

Are they really free?

Yes. They're MIT licensed and on GitHub, with no account and nothing to pay. Scratchpad itself is a paid app, and the skills work without it.

How do I use one once it's installed?

Ask the way you normally would. "Turn this transcript into meeting notes" is enough. To be sure a particular skill is used, name it: "use the cornell-notes skill". More tips.

Will a skill change my notes without asking?

No. The skills that reorganise notes show you the plan and wait for a yes, and none of them deletes anything. In Scratchpad, no assistant can delete a note anyway, and the version before every edit stays in the note's history.

Can I write my own?

Yes. Copy one, change it, and keep it in your assistant's skills folder. To share it, the style guide explains how ours are written, and pull requests are welcome.

Is Scratchpad free?

No, but there's a 30-day money-back guarantee. If Scratchpad isn't for you, email us within 30 days of your first payment and we'll refund it in full. The skills are free either way.

Give your notes somewhere to land.
