Closing your account

What's deleted, when, and how long you have to change your mind.

Closing an account is deliberate, and reversible for a while. Here's exactly what happens.

Straight away

Your account is walled off. Sessions end, API tokens stop working, share links stop opening, and your plan is cancelled.

Published pages stop opening too, from the moment you close the account.

For thirty days

Your notes and files are still on the server, and you can change your mind.

Signing in still works, and it's how you undo a closure: the app shows the date everything goes, with a Keep my account button that puts it back with everything in it. Signing in on its own doesn't restore anything. The button is the undo.

There's no button that makes the deletion happen sooner. That's on purpose. A sweep runs on a schedule, and until it does there's something to change your mind about.

After thirty days

Everything goes: your notes, your uploads, your photo, and every row about you in the directory. It isn't a flag on a record, it's the file being removed from disk.

Two things are kept on purpose, and neither holds anything that identifies you: our own log of what an administrator did, with your address stripped out of it, and the record of any complaint somebody else made about a page you published.

Copies in backups are gone within ninety days, as those backups are replaced in turn.

Before you close it

Take your notes with you first. Settings → Your data → Download everything gives you a zip with every note, your folders, and the PDFs, images, and recordings the notes point at.

Export as Markdown, beside it, is the words only, with no files.
