Inviting somebody by email
A labelled share link sent to an address, not an account on your notebook.
The Invite tab on a note's share panel sends somebody a link by email.
What it actually is
A share link with a name on it. The person doesn't get an account on your notebook, can't see anything else, and has nothing to sign into.
The label is for you. The share panel lists an address instead of a column of identical links, so you can see at a glance who has a way in, and take one person's away.
Whoever opens the link is asked what to call them, and that's the name their edits carry in the note's history, invitation or not.
If the email never arrives
Ask them to check the spam folder first, and check the address for a typo. An invitation to a mistyped address is sent, it just goes nowhere you can see.
If it still hasn't turned up, you don't have to wait for it. Copy the link from the share panel and send it yourself, by whatever you'd normally use. It's the same link the email carries.
